Artist Collaboration With Maliha Abidi
Born and raised in Karachi, Pakistan, Maliha Abidi is an artist, an author and a student of Medical Neuroscience. Centered on female empowerment, BIPOC stories, and mental health, Maliha’s work advocates for societal change through art, writing, storytelling and has been featured on BBC, Glamour Magazine Uk, the Malala Fund, and more. Maliha is currently working on her 2nd book, Rise, featuring 100 women of color from 30+ countries.
Her debut book “Pakistan for Women: Stories of women who have achieved something extraordinary” combines her passion for art and writing. The book brings together stories of more than 50 women from Pakistan alongside their illustrations. It is the first book of its kind to be published in Pakistan as it brings together stories of real Pakistani women, from female astrophysicists to female educators to female firefighter, in a storytelling form.
For our December readings, we teamed up with Maliha on 12 original portraits of environmental advocates, thought leaders, and cultural change makers.

SCORPIO
“It starts with trusting yourself, even if people are telling you you’re too young to trust yourself.” - SZA
Scorpio, the Sun’s energy in Sagittarius this month makes us all more aware of the world around us and the roles that we play in it. Like SZA, a fellow Scorpion, you can harness the power and charisma of your sign to advocate against plastic pollution for people and the planet.
In 2018 SZA made waves when she teased a sustainable clothing line on Instagram, and also pledged to #HydrateLike a pop star in 2020, refusing single-use plastic water bottles and rallying her audience to join the movement.
Scorpio, because you were born with an almost unnatural intuition and introspective super skills, there is not much the sun in Sagittarius can surprise you with, though you may still feel yourself drawn to new ideas this month. If you find yourself in search of ways to become a part of something bigger than yourself, let us reassure you: you already are. Thanks for being on this journey with us.

SAGITTARIUS
“When people do things that they're passionate about, they're going to be able to create bigger impact than when they do something they really don't want to do. So find that.” - Melati Wisjen
First things first: Happy birthday, Sagittarius! In 2020 you have been a source of light and hope for friends and family, a beacon guiding us all towards a brighter future. We know you probably don’t hear it enough, so, thank you.
This month, Mercury and the Sun are in your house until December 20th and December 21st, respectively. We are all more hopeful with Sagittarius in the stars and all the more willing to take bolder steps towards the future that we want to see. Embrace this quality and your confidence.
In true Sagittarius form, when activist Melati Wijsen sees a problem, she takes action. She co-founded Bye Bye Plastic Bags with her sister when she was just 12 years old and has since become a world-renowned activist, successfully passing legislation to ban single-use plastic bags in Bali, Indonesia. For a Sagittarius, climbing the mountain — the obstacle — is part of what makes work in activism so rewarding.
The forward-facing spirit of the Archer is indomitable, even in the most challenging times, when the world needs its influence most. Energy that reminds us to look ahead, instead of behind. Keep your eyes and ears focused on the future, Sag.

CAPRICORN
“It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated.” - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. doesn’t need an introduction, but he too was a Capricorn. What you might not know is that MLK was also an environmental activist! As we’ve seen this year, intersectionality to any issue, especially the environment, is the key to addressing issues at a systemic level.
MLK was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, TN, a few days after he arrived to attend a rally supporting Black striking sanitation workers, who were protesting the death of their colleagues at the Memphis Sanitation Department and the unsafe working conditions there. The men wore signs around their neck that stated “I AM A MAN” in an effort to convey the inhumane conditions waste workers were forced to endure because of systemic racism.
Capricorn, ever constant and wise, you have navigated the twists and turns of 2020 with a quiet grace, and shown your loved ones the cracks and crannies in the cliffside where they can place their feet to climb after you. Right now, with the sun in Sagittarius, is the time to look to the future and recommit to environmental justice.

AQUARIUS
“Let righteousness cover the earth, like the water cover the sea!” - Bob Marley
It should go without saying that there has never been a social justice movement without the light of Aquarius shining somewhere at the helm. More than any other, THIS is the sign of the humanitarian. Without you, Aquarius, there would be fewer ideas, fewer words, and less music.
It should come as no surprise that Bob Marley is an Aquarian, since he changed the world with his music. The legacy of his voice persists today, 40 years after his passing, to inspire the hearts and minds of new generations. Marley sang about life, and about resistance and oppression, about love, suffering, and hope. The messages Marley shared with the world through his songs rocketed him into stardom and in turn, furthered his quest for social justice.
This month, the Sun is in Sagittarius until the night of the winter solstice. While the archer pulls us toward the “big picture,” use this time to reflect on your ability to steer the ship towards environmental justice.

PISCES
“I wanted the packaging to be beautiful, but also functional with an earth-conscious approach. Nobody is perfect, but I really believe we can try our best to do right and we’ll keep evolving as we go. “ —Rihanna, on Fenty Beauty
2020, the year that has felt at times like an eternity! Lucky for you, your natural intuition guides you through the uncertainties of every chapter of your life. Don’t be afraid to trust it, and trust yourself. When you embrace the power of your imagination and your dreams, there’s no telling what you can accomplish.
Like Rihanna, your fellow Pisces, you are an artist capable of inspiring great change in the world. On top of participating in the 2017 Women’s March, being vocal about her political beliefs and refusing to perform at the 2020 Super Bowl in support of Colin Kaepernick, Rihanna is encouraging sustainability through Fenty Beauty, her cosmetics brand. Fenty Beauty is on a mission to become more earth-conscious, with refillable systems and by making it easier for their customers to recycle by providing instructions on how to dismantle component parts. This is SO important, because it helps ensure the plastic you put in your recycling bin actually ends up getting recycled.
With the Sun in Sagittarius right now, look to the future and embrace new ideas. Let’s be real, we have no idea what 2021 will look like.

ARIES
“When we plant trees, we plant the seeds of peace and hope.” - Wangari Maathai
When we look at leaders around the world, Aries stands out as chief among them. No sign is more willing or ready to forge a path forward for change with the sheer force of their personality alone.
Meet Wangari Maathai (1940 - 2011): Aries, environmental and political activist, first African woman to win the Nobel Prize, founder of the Green Belt Movement (GBM), recipient of the Right Livelihood Award for “converting the Kenyan ecological debate into mass action for reforestation.” We stan.
As a direct and happy consequence of Wangari Maathai’s incredible leadership, the GBM has planted over 51 million trees in Kenya and empowered women throughout Kenya to work together to revitalize their communities and local ecology. With the Sun and Mercury in Sagittarius right now, encouraging us all to look towards the future, we can follow Wangari Maathai’s example to become the leaders the world needs today.
♉️
TAURUS
“The truth is: the natural world is changing. And we are totally dependent on that world. It provides our food, water and air. It is the most precious thing we have and we need to defend it.” - David Attenborough
Sir David Attenborough might just have the most recognizable voice in conservation, and with good reason — he has worked in British broadcasting and been teaching us all about the natural history of our shared world since before 1954. Since that time, as the narrator of BBC nature documentaries like Blue Planet, Blue Planet II and, the newest, Netflix’s A Life On Our Planet, Attenborough’s voice has risen to the forefront of the environmental movement.
This sixty-six year legacy is a beautiful testament to the stubborn nature of your shared sign, the Bull. Taurus, you are unstoppable.
The great defender, guardian of the family and the home, your whole life you have never had to go looking for responsibility, because responsibility finds you. Taurus, while Sagittarius is hanging out in your sun this month, harness the optimism of the Archer in everything that you do ahead of the new year.
♊️
GEMINI
“Environmental justice is the intersection of both social justice and environmentalism, where the inequity in environmental degradation is also considered.” - Leah Thomas
Gemini: the sign of the Twins. We cannot think of a sign better suited to help the world embrace and understand the ties between social justice and environmentalism; the knowledge that you can’t have one without the other.
Although (Green Girl) Leah is NOT a Gemini, but a Sag (HBD!), the sun was in Gemini’s house on May 28th; the day Leah called on the environmentalist community to “stand in solidarity with the black lives matter movement and with Black, Indigenous + POC communities impacted daily by both social and environmental injustice.”
This day marked the beginning of Intersectional Environmentalist, a platform founded by Leah, dedicated to dismantling systems of oppression in the environmental movement.
This month, the forward-facing momentum of the Sun in Sagittarius encourages us all to embrace new ideas, and to explore new paths. The dual nature of the Twins lends itself well to change, and to Gemini’s knack for seeing the world through multiple lenses. We’re pretty sure it’s no coincidence that Leah Thomas, a Sagittarius sun with a Gemini moon, is leading the initiative towards a rebirth of the environmentalist movement — one that is better for the planet and people.
Gemini, you have a special ability to help your fellow humans connect the dots between ideas and concepts, guiding us all to new understandings. Take action to further your personal growth, join the Intersectional Environmentalist movement.

CANCER
“When I look at nature, I see that Mother Nature knows diversity is the only way.” - Wyn Wiley
Cancer, there is some serious power in the incredible depth of your emotions. Naturally self-protective, you’re pretty comfortable living your life out of the spotlight. We understand, but we also want to remind you of the special light that you bring to the world.
Like your fellow Cancer, artist and activist Wyn Wiley, creator of drag queen Pattie Gonia, YOU have an incredible ability to inspire others with your authentic self. Wyn and Pattie are intersectional environmentalists both celebrating and advocating for diversity and LGBQTIA+ in the outdoors. Through Pattie, Wyn challenges patriarchal assumptions about the people we should expect to see on the trail — by proving that nature is for everyone. Sound like someone you know, Cancerian? We thought so too. :)
♌️
LEO
“My experience in the Maldives made it obvious how our short-term use of plastic has a long-term damaging effect on our oceans." - Chris Hemsworth
The magnanimous spirit of the Lion shines bright within you, Leo, and this month we’re taking a page out of your book and looking to the stars — both those in the Milky Way and in the movies. Superstar Chris Hemsworth doesn’t just play fictional heroes in Hollywood —he’s a hero in the real world too. In true Leo form, Chris stood up for the little guy this October when he teamed up with conservationist Tim Faulkner, Aussie Ark, Wild Ark and Global Wildlife Conservation to reintroduce the Tasmanian Devil to mainland Australia, where they have been extinct for 3,000 years—until now.
The importance of this historic comeback cannot be understated. As ecosystem engineers, Tasmanian Devils keep forests healthy by reducing the buildup of flammable material on the forest floor. Rewilding the Tasmanian Devil on mainland Australia will help keep forests cool and reduce the severity of fires. Right now, with the Sun and Mercury in Sagittarius until December 20th, we are more likely than usual to seek new information. So keep your eyes peeled Leo.
♍️
VIRGO
“People of color disproportionately bear climate impacts, from storms to heat waves to pollution. Fossil-fueled power plants and refineries are disproportionately located in Black neighborhoods.” - Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson
Your fellow Virgo and our friend Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson is a marine biologist, brilliant conservation strategist and an expert on policy. Like you, Virgo, Dr. Johnson is tireless in her climate action. In 2020, she and Dr. Katherine Wilkinson published an all-women anthology titled All We Can Save as a reminder to stay positive and committed as we work for climate justice.
With the Sun in Sagittarius until December 21, you might feel the pull to look at things from another perspective. Lean into it!! Embrace the archer’s curiosity and dive deep into solutions that can scale to meet the threat of the climate crisis.
♎️
LIBRA
“We can't eat money or drink oil.” - Autumn Peltier
Libra, diplomacy and the pursuit of justice are such an important part of who you are that it might feel like they’re built into your DNA, or written in the stars…
In 2019, Canadian Indigenous activist Autumn Peltier addressed the world from United Nations Headquarters about the sacred teachings of water, the reasons that we need to work together to protect it, and the concerns she has for Indigenous communities in Canada (and communities around the world) where the water is not safe to drink. From the stage, Peltier demanded an end to single-use plastic and reminded the world of water’s sacred nature, and its inalienable right and shared need across countries, creeds, and cultures. Like Anishinaabe-kew water protector Autumn Peltier, a fellow Libra, you have a powerful voice for defending human rights and speaking up against injustice.
We’re just dropping in to remind you of that power. Lean into the energy generated by the sun in Sagittarius.
